Seeing woman for marriage without Hijab
Question:
Is it allowed for a man to see the woman whom he wants to marry without wearing her HIJAB?
Answer:
Praise to be Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
Islam has made lawful for a man intending to marry a woman to look at her. The Prophet (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) even made this a Sunnah. He said: “If Allah brings to the heart of a man to propose marriage for a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her”. Narrated by Imam Ahmad, Ibn Maja from Muhammad bin Maslamah.
In another Hadith he said: “If one of you proposes to a woman, there is no haram in his looking at (some parts) of her (body) if he is looking at her for the purpose of getting engaged to her, even if she is unaware of that”. Narrated by Imam Ahmad from abu-Humeidah.
In another Hadith, he said: “Look at her. This could be more appropriate for bridging between you”. Narrated by Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim.
So, for these Hadith and others, Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) emphasized looking at the future bride if possible to avoid any possible embarrassment after the marriage. But one should know that any meeting with the future bride should be in the presence of a Mahram (an unmarriageable man). One must not look at her twice to satisfy his sexual desire.
Allah knows best.
